BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU
Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Middlebury American Jiu Jitsu Academy is a special experience. Our gym is known for teaching strong, smart, and simple Jiu-Jitsu that works in real life and is also fun to learn.
In our classes, you will learn how to stay safe, keep good distance, bring someone to the ground, and stay in control. You will also learn how to use safe and effective moves to stop an opponent.
FUNDAMENTAL BJJ PROGRAM
Our Fundamental curriculum focuses on leverage, technique, positioning, defense, and essential BJJ submissions. The perfect program for beginners of all ages, we offer Fundamental BJJ classes multiple times every day and we recommend that all students attend at least one Fundamental class per week.
ADVANCED BJJ PROGRAM
This Program is for students who have made sufficient progress in the Fundamental Program, and was created with focus on technique, efficient transitions and submissions. It includes access to all classes.
TYPICAL CLASS
Starts with a brief functional warm-up
Followed by instruction on 1-2 stand-up/take-down techniques, with students drilling each move multiple times
The instructor then demonstrates 2-3 techniques on the ground (positioning, transitions, submissions), again students drill each technique with a partner several times to put the moves into their muscle memory
Class usually ends with “live training” to reinforce the techniques taught. (Advanced Program only)
FREE INTRODUCTORY CLASS
The introductory class is a free, 30-40 minute, one-on-one session by appointment outlining the basics of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu theory, positions and submissions. This class serves as a preparatory class to those interested in enrolling at the academy.
WHO CAN LEARN JIU-JITSU?
Anyone can train Jiu-Jitsu at Middlebury American Jiu Jitsu Academy. Jiu-Jitsu was designed to help smaller or less experienced people defend themselves against bigger, stronger opponents. You don’t need to be in shape, flexible, or athletic to start—just willing to learn.
IS BJJ GOOD EXERCISE?
Absolutely. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of the best full-body workouts you can do. Most new students experience noticeable weight loss, better stamina, improved balance, increased strength, and a big boost in confidence. You’ll get fit while learning real skills.
IS JIU-JITSU SAFE?
Safety is our top priority. Our instructors closely monitor every class to make sure training partners work respectfully and at the right intensity. If someone isn’t being safe, we step in immediately. We’re committed to creating a safe, controlled, and welcoming training environment for everyone.
